Pfizer Inc., manufacturer of the arthritis painkiller Celebrex, has refused to remove Celebrex from the market despite a study released Dec. 17, 2004 linking Celebrex to a higher incidence of heart attacks.

Two days after the study by a national health organization was released, Pfizer announced it would stop advertising Celebrex, which has been used by more than 26 million people over the past five years and whose sales hit $3.3 billion in 2004.\

Then, on Jan 31, 2005, Pfizer acknowledged that a 1999 study of Alzheimer's patients found that taking Celebrex resulted in a nearly fourfold risk of heart attacks and strokes, though it said the study was too small to offer conclusive proof. On April 7, 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked Pfizer to include a “black box” warning – the strongest possible – on the Celebrex label. One the same day Pfizer, at the urging of the FDA, removed a second and similar drug, Bextra, from the market because concerns over severe side effects, namely heart attacks and strokes.

Celebrex is in the same class of drugs - COX-2 inhibitors - as Vioxx and Bextra. Vioxx was pulled from the market on Sept. 30, 2004 by Merck & Co., also because of cardiovascular risks.

While Pfizer has decided to continue marketing Celebrex, the FDA has urged doctors to consider prescribing alternatives to Celebrex.
